What happens if you eat expired Nutella?

In this article, we will answer the question “What happens if you eat expired Nutella?”, how to tell if the Nutella has gone bad, how to salvage unopened expired Nutella, how to store Nutella, and how to make Nutella stuffed rolls.

What happens if you eat expired Nutella?

If you at expired Nutella, nothing will happen unless the Nutella was spoiled. The expiry date of the Nutella has more to do with its quality than safety. In other words, Nutella remains safe to eat, for at least 1-2 months past its expiry if it was stored correctly.

Nutella, irrespective of the size of the jar, lasts about 12 months once opened. It is a pretty long time to finish the whole jar of Nutella for someone who is an ardent lover of the spread.

Still, if you have some unfinished expired Nutella, inspect it closely for spoilage before devouring it. There are a few telltale signs of spoiled Nutella discussed in the article below.

How to tell if the Nutella has gone bad?

If the Nutella has gone bad, it will smell awful rancid. Because the hazelnuts in the Nutella contain fat which is susceptible to oxidation when repeatedly exposed to air.

Another sign of spoilage in Nutella is the shift in consistency. Nutella should have a creamy and spreadable texture. If it feels dried out and no longer has a velvety smooth texture, it needs to go.

Last but not the least, if there is something off about the taste of Nutella, feel free to discard it on grounds of poor quality.

How to salvage unopened expired Nutella?

Expiry does not necessarily mean that the Nutella is bad. What it means is that the quality degradation will occur at a much faster pace past the expiry. First, you need to make sure the expired Nutella clears all the quality checks.

There should be no off-taste, off-smell, or undesirable texture. Then you need to find a way to finish the Nutella before it goes bad. Toast uses only a thin film of Nutella and it will take a long time this way before the jar is finished.

We suggest you use the expired Nuttela in a baking project. For example, whip up some Nutella cookies, or Nutella cupcakes. Baking exposes the expired Nutella to high temperatures and eliminates any risks to food safety if present. Alternatively, you can make Nutella sundaes or shakes.

How to store Nutella?

Ideally, Nutella should be stored somewhere cool, dark, and dry, away from direct or indirect sources of heat such as the sunlight or the what from the stovetop.

A cool pantry is your best option if the temperature can be maintained between 18-20 degrees. Opt for refrigeration when the outside temperature is warmer than 20 degrees.

One problem with storing the Nutella in the fridge is that it solidifies the spread. But this is fixable. Remove the Nutella from the fridge and place it on the counter for 10 minutes before spreading it on your bread.

How to make Nutella stuffed rolls?

  • 2 cups milk 500 ml
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 stick of butter (8 tbsp)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 5 1/2 cups all-purpose flour up to 6 cups
  • 1 cup Nutella or jam of your choice
  • 1 egg beaten for brushing over the rolls

  1. Heat ¼ cup of milk in the microwave or on the stovetop. Stir in the yeast and sugar. Wait for about 10 minutes to allow the yeast to ferment sugar. This is indicated by the formation of bubbles or foam on the surface of the milk accompanied by a noticeable yeasty smell.
  1. In a mixing bowl, add melted butter. Then stir in sugar and eggs until pale yellow and fluffy mixture is obtained. Lastly, mix in the yeast mixture, remaining milk, and salt. Make sure everything is homogenous.
  1. Now add the flour into the liquid ingredients, in increments of ½ cup. The end product should be a non-sticky, soft, and pliable dough.
  1. Place the dough in a  greased bowl and cover with a damp towel for about an hour or until doubled in size.
  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
  1. Divide the dough into 6 equal portions. Then form each portion into a ball using the palm of your hands. Flatten each ball into a circle with a 12-14 inch diameter.
  1. Cut the dough into 6 or 8 equal pizza slices and fill them with a teaspoon of Nutella. Roll filled slice and make a crescent shape Repeat this process with the rest of the balls.
  1. Place the rolls onto a baking tray and brush them with egg wash. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes or until nice and golden.
